WWIVNet
By: Steve Kunz
WWIVNet was started by the author of the World War IV (commonly known as
WWIV) BBS software, Wayne Bell. Having grown from a few systems at it's
begining, to over 1300 systems today WWIVNet is a wide reaching network. BBS's
involved with WWIVNet can be found all around the world from most every state
in the U.S.A. to Japan, Asia, and Europe.
Describing WWIVNet is a tough job. Systems in WWIVNet all use the WWIV
network software to connect together. Connections are sometimes hard to
figure out, because in this network a sysop may connect his BBS to any system
he wishes as long as both systems are in agreement. This type of setup allows
mail to move fairly quickly from one point to another, especially if the
sender and the receiver are connected.
What makes WWIVNet so enjoyable for so many people has got to be the
(what seems to be endless) amout of networked message subs that are
available. You can find subs for almost any occasion. Subs on WWIVnet can be
autorequestable or secured (permission is required to join), and most sysops
will try to carry what their users like to read.
Networked E-Mail on WWIVNet allows you to send mail to people all over the
world. To send mail on a WWIVNet system you need to have the name or user
number of the person you are mailing (Remember, if the person you are sending
mail to uses a handle instead of their real name you need to use their handle
for their name). Mail is routed by the name and node number so to send mail
on a WWIVNet system to me you would need to send it as follows:
Steve Kunz @5927. This routes the mail to the account name of Steve Kunz
at WWIVNet system number 5927. You could also send it to 1@5927. This routes
the mail to user number 1 at WWIVNet system 5927.
New Features to WWIVNet include gating of messages and mail between
different networks. WWIVNet allows this to be done between networks that are
based on the WWIV structure, though utilities have been written to allow
messages and Email to be passed to Fido type nets and UUCP type nets.
If you are interested in the WWIV BBS program or in WWIVNet, to receive
more information, you should contact the author of WWIV, Wayne Bell, or
your local WWIV Group Coordinator.
